A Siamese named Nero was very much down on his luck. He was only one year old, but his owner had abandoned him in the middle of the city they lived in. And even worse, Nero was neutered ! In any case, after 3 days of wandering, the poor Siamese was lost, confused, and his fur was dirty. He then decided...

...to check out the dumpster behind Joe's Diner on Main Street. Surely there would be something to eat there! So, he followed his nose to the alley, but he couldn't figure out how to get to the food!...

...Suddenly a young man came out of the restaurant and lifted the lid of the trash can. In jumped Nero. The next thing he knew, the lid came down with a bang, and he was stuck in the dark in a gooey mess. Yeccch!...

...Nero cried and cried. Not only was he hungry, but now he was stuck! He heard noises once again and heard the trash can lid being lifted off the stinky garbage can. He was furry afraid. But a nice woman's face appeared. "Oh, you poor dear!" the woman exclaimed, "you must need a home! The woman wrapped Nero in a blanket and took him to her home. After Nero got there, he was given lots of chicken and warm milk. But the best surprise was...

...Nero heard the hoomin bean say, "You are safe now, and loved. This is your home now. No more dumpsters for you!" Then Nero was picked up and taken to his hoomin's bedroom. A carton was put onto the floor with a soft pillow inside.

...and what a dream he had! He dreamed of a world where cats truly, truly ruled the planet. Humans and all lower forms of life only existed for the purpose to make kitty-rulers more comfortable, and to keep them entertained. Of course, with cats running the government and making the laws, a lot of things were done differently....

...Nero noticed that the quality of every day life was definitely improved! In his dream, he was surrounded by peace, love and beauty. There was no homeless kitties, no illnesses and no wars. Suddenly he was rudely awakened by the penetrating sound of a siren. He was frightened and he wanted a place to hide. When he noticed that a door was slightly ajar, he jumped out of his box and ran into...

Blackie Jamison:

...his new Meowmie who soothingly explained that a nice policeman was going to have to take Nero away, because his original owner wanted him back! Nero ran and hid under the couch. He didn't want his mean old owner. The humans searched and searched, but couldn't find him. Then, when they left, his Meowmie smiled and lifted the couch, where she knew he was hiding all along. She gave him some warm milk and promised that his old cat owner would not bother him again...

This story of Nero was written from March 16, 2000 to April 13, 2000.

It is dedicated to the memory of Bridget Dalton, a very thoughtful, creative Siamese,
who passed over the Rainbow Bridge in October 2000.
